Narrator
Hey, you're listening to China232.com.
Back in the studio, number 99, China232.com.
China232.com.
Back with Ad.
What's up, Ad?
Ah, not too much, Andrew.
How's it going with you?
Pretty good.
Ah, good.
We are talking about opening a restaurant today, actually before, earlier when we were in China, we were thinking about opening a restaurant/bar, if you can believe that.
We were thinking about it, so this dialogue actually is kind of reminiscent of the past of Ad and I and another friend, and the funny thing is, the bar probably would have failed almost certainly because we really had, well, we had no idea what we were doing at all.
Well we didn't really have any bar or restaurant experience per se, but we had a lot of heart, didn't we?
We were excited about doing the business and I think that's the number one importance.
We were excited about it, I'll give you that, and then instead of doing the bar for whatever reason, it's kind of a long story, we won't tell it, but we decided to open a website that we really don't know much about either, so I guess we're into doing things we don't know much about.
Alright, well trying things and seeing how it goes, and I think so far, so good.
Yeah, so I tend to agree with you, Ad, so let's just jump into the dialogue so we've got a little more to talk about.
I'm thinking of opening my own restaurant.
I've always loved going to restaurants, so I think it would be fun to own one.
Every restaurant owner I've ever talked to said it's a tougher job than most people think.
Long hours and thin margins.
Because it seems so easy and glamorous, it has become one of the most competitive industries.
A large percentage of restaurants go out of business within the first two years.
I think I can beat the odds.
I believe I can make the best hamburgers in the city.
There's a lot more to being successful than making good food.
A lot of restaurants with average food do well because of advertising and the image they create.
Consumers even realize that the food is only average, yet they still go.
It's a weird phenomenon.
Alright, well that was our dialogue about starting a restaurant, and after hearing it and hearing us talking about it, I'm kind of getting excited and thinking about opening one again.
Ad.
Pretty interesting.
Maybe a hamburger restaurant.
Right.
I kind of do believe I can make a decent burger, so maybe I should open one.
Who knows?
Ad is a pretty good cook, I'd have to admit.
Anyway, first one we have Thin Margins.
So here margin refers to the difference between the cost to the restaurant and the selling price.
So for example, if you have a business and it costs you $10 to buy something, and then you sell it for only $11, that's not a very big profit margin.
You're only making $1 on that.
If you buy something for $10 and sell it for $100, that's a huge profit margin.
Right, exactly, and if you're only selling it for $11, you probably have other expenses, so you won't even be making any money and you'll be losing a lot, I would guess.
Yeah, well normally actually when you talk about the margin, you are including those expenses into the $10.
My point was, is that many people don't.
That's true, dude, those are bad businessmen.
Anyway, so a thin profit margin is a very, very small profit margin.
Right, you're not making much money off each sale.
Right, so the idea here is that owning restaurants, because it's a very competitive industry, the margins are very thin.
They're not making a lot of money on each sale usually, so they rely on a lot of volume.
This is the problem of very competitive industries.
Right, you better be selling a lot of these hamburgers, or I should say, I should be selling a lot if I want to be making a lot of money, or even staying in business.
Even staying in business, yeah.
So if you're actually doing kind of a niche market where there's not many other people doing the same thing as you, sometimes you can have really big profit margins, because nobody else is competing with you, so you can sell for a lot higher of a price.
Right, so the restaurant industry sounded very glamorous to me, but maybe not in real life.
Maybe it wouldn't have worked out like I had planned.
Absolutely, so glamorous here.
If something is glamorous, it means it's very exciting, very desirable, very fashionable.
So we often talk about movie stars having a very glamorous lifestyle.
Right, or you could say that Andrew and I live a very glamorous lifestyle.
Probably wouldn't say that if you saw what we did sometimes, but maybe you would, who knows?
Well we're hoping to create the image of glamour for ourselves, I'm not sure we're very successful.
Well maybe the pictures of us in the discussion forum with our sunglasses, maybe people think we're a little bit glamorous.
That is pretty glamorous, yeah.
Anyway, so yeah, a lot of people think opening a bar or a restaurant is pretty glamorous, it's pretty cool, it sounds easy, and that makes a lot of people try it, which makes the industry actually quite difficult.
Right, very competitive, many people are doing it, and again, very thin margins, unfortunately.
Yeah, so this makes a lot of restaurants go out of business in the first couple of years, and if something goes out of business, it means they stop running the business usually because they've lost their money.
Right, no money coming in, and there is no more money probably.
Exactly.
So I could say, his company went out of business mainly because the competition from large corporations was too strong, unfortunately this happens to a lot of small business owners, if they're trying to compete with large multinationals, they often lose out.
Right, well maybe in my case, since I have the best burger in town, I might be a little bit different case.
Exactly, I was hoping to beat the odds.
So if you beat the odds, it means you'reable to accomplish something that most people in your situation couldn't.
So what's an example of that ad?
Okay, she had cancer, and the doctors told her she had only a 10% chance to survive, and she beat the odds and overcame it.
Right, so her positive attitude and her love from her family and friends maybe helped her to beat the odds, which made her survive cancer.
As with beating the odds is, if the statistics or the probability say that you're not going to make it, and then you do make it, you beat the odds.
Really, you beat anything if you haveless than a 50% chance of doing something, and then you overcome that obstacle, and you win.
So for example, if a lot of people are saying that we don't have a chance, this website, to become more popular than Google.com, and we're hoping to beat the odds.
Right, we're still thinking about having the best of something, kind of like the best burger, the best podcast.
I think it can be done, and it will be done, in my opinion.
We're just going to stay here for the rest of our lives hoping to beat the odds.
And then I said, "Well, Ad says he's going to make the best hamburgers in the city, so that's why he thinks that'll help him to beat the odds." And then I said,"Well, there's a lot more to being successful than just making good food." And a lot of people don't actually really know that.
That's what lures them into starting a restaurant.
They think, "Well, I can cook.
What's the big deal?
I can make better food." But if you say there's a lot more to something, it means that it's more complicated than it first appears.
Restaurants aren't just having good food at low prices.
There's a lot of marketing, and a lot of image creation, and a lot of built.
There's just a lot that goes into this.
Right, a lot of other factors than just, "Do you have a good burger?" Exactly.
I mean, you can imagine McDonald's who does very well, obviously.
They don't make a very good hamburger, although I do like it sometimes.
That's not really their specialty.
Most people, if they wanted, could make a better hamburger.
They've just been successful because of their marketing in a lot of other areas.
Right.
Well, they're cheap and fast at least, so they have something there.
But right, there's a lot of other factors that play here.
Right, so we've all seen restaurants that have a pretty good product.
You like it.
You go to it often, and then you realize, "Oh, this thing closed down.
It went out of business because they weren't making any money." It's a shame, really, because it would be nice if the good products were the things that always made the money, but unfortunately, in reality, it's not true.
Right, sometimes people just don't hear the restaurants, and then they have to close down because no customers equals basically no money.
So just to use this, "There's more to,"I could say, "There's a lot more to being a model than standing in front of the camera trying to look pretty." A lot of people think,"That's all models do.
Just put on makeup and stand in front of the camera." Well, I don't really know, but apparently, there is a lot more to it.
Right, right.
There's a TV show that says that there is a lot more to it, and it's a lot more about who you are.
I'm not totally sure about that.
Maybe some of the model listeners can tell us about this.
Maybe, yeah.
Or a DJ.
DJs make a lot of money at clubs, and you might think, "All they really do is just play music.
What's the big deal?" Apparently, there's a lot more to being a DJ than just playing music, just pushing play.
Right.
Well, they mix their own music and track, so I think that's a little bit different.
Anyway, that's a different story altogether.
Okay, last one we have here is Phenomenon.
You said it's a weird phenomenon.
What were you talking about?
Well, I said that consumers, that people going to these restaurants, they realize sometimes the food is only average, yet they still go.
I said that was a weird phenomenon.
A phenomenon is really a fact that's kind of fascinating or a little bit surprising.
So I could say the economist is trying to explain the phenomenon of why coffee is more than double the price in big cities.
Right, so something that is interesting and true at the same time.
Right, some little fact is a phenomenon.
You got to get used to seeing this word in context, and then you'll understand, but it's a fact.
It's a piece of information that's a little bit interesting, surprising really.
I'm surprised with that fact myself.
Didn't know.
I'm going to be doing a lot here at China232.com.
