"What is the difference between apples and sugar?""What is the difference between light bulbs and electricity?""What is the difference between trees and rain?""What do you think?""Do you give up, shall I tell you?""The difference between apples and sugar is simply this.
فرق بین سیب و شکر چیست؟ فرق بین لامپ و برق چیست؟ فرق بین درخت و باران چیست؟ چه فکر میکنید؟ تسلیم شدید؟ فرق سیب و شکر ساده است.
You can count apples, one apple, two apples, three apples, etc.
میتوانید سیبها را بشمارید: یک سیب، دو سیب، سه سیب و غیره.
You cannot count sugar.
نمیتوانید شکر را بشمارید.
You can weigh sugar, you can measure sugar, but you cannot count sugar.
میتوانید شکر را وزن کنید یا اندازه بگیرید، اما نمیتوانید آن را بشمارید.
And it is the same with light bulbs and electricity, and trees and rain.
در مورد لامپ و برق، و درخت و باران هم همینطور است.
You can count light bulbs and trees.
میتوانید لامپها و درختها را بشمارید.
You cannot count electricity or rain.""Does this matter?"you may be asking.
اما نمیتوانید برق یا باران را بشمارید. شاید بپرسید آیا این مهم است؟
"Why is he telling us these things?""Well, dear listeners, often we want to say ' how many ' or ' how much of something there is.' And when we do this we need to remember that there are some words which we can use only with things we can count.
«چرا دارد این چیزها را به ما میگوید؟» خب، شنوندگان عزیز، ما اغلب میخواهیم بگوییم چیزی چقدر یا چندتاست، و برای این کار باید بدانیم بعضی واژهها فقط با چیزهای قابل شمارش میآیند.
And other words which we can use only with things we cannot count.
و بعضی واژههای دیگر فقط با چیزهایی میآیند که نمیتوانیم بشماریم.
Here are some examples.
چند مثال ببینید.
We can count cars, one car, two cars, etc.
میتوانیم ماشینها را بشماریم: یک ماشین، دو ماشین و غیره.
So we can say, "There are only a few cars on the road today." But there are many cars on the road today.
پس میتوانیم بگوییم «امروز فقط چند ماشین در جاده هستند» یا «امروز ماشینهای زیادی در جاده هستند.»
There are several cars parked outside my house.
چندین ماشین بیرون خانه من پارک شدهاند.
There are fewer cars than there were yesterday.
ماشینهای کمتری نسبت به دیروز وجود دارد.
Few, many, several, and fewer are words that we can use with things we can count, like cars, but we cannot use them with things that we cannot count.
واژههای few، many، several و fewer با چیزهای قابل شمارش مثل cars استفاده میشوند، اما با چیزهای غیرقابل شمارش نمیآیند.
Or imagine that you are painting your house.
یا تصور کنید دارید خانهتان را رنگ میکنید.
We cannot count paint.
نمیتوانیم رنگ را بشماریم.
We can weigh paint, and we can measure paint, but we cannot count paint.
میتوانیم رنگ را وزن کنیم یا اندازه بگیریم، اما نمیتوانیم آن را بشماریم.
We can say, "I need a little paint for the kitchen,"or "a little bit of paint for the kitchen." So I do not need to buy much paint.
میتوانیم بگوییم «برای آشپزخانه کمی رنگ لازم دارم» یا «کمی رنگ برای آشپزخانه»، بنابراین لازم نیست رنگ زیادی بخرم.
But I need to buy a large amount of paint for the living room.
اما برای اتاق نشیمن باید مقدار زیادی رنگ بخرم.
I needless paint for the bathroom than for the bedroom.
برای حمام به رنگ کمتری نسبت به اتاق خواب نیاز دارم.
A little, much, a large amount of, andless are words that we can use with things we cannot count, like paint, but not with things that we can count.
واژههای a little، much، a large amount of و less با چیزهای غیرقابل شمارش مثل paint استفاده میشوند، نه با چیزهای قابل شمارش.
How do you know what things we can count and what things we cannot count?
از کجا بفهمید چه چیزهایی قابل شمارشاند و چه چیزهایی نیستند؟
Well, generally, if a noun is a plural noun, if it has an's ' at the end, then it is the name of something we can count, like apples or cars.
به طور کلی، اگر یک اسم جمع باشد و در پایان s داشته باشد، نام چیزی است که میتوانیم بشماریم، مثل apples یا cars.
And if the noun is singular, with no's ' at the end, then it is the name of something that we cannot count, like electricity or rain.
و اگر اسم مفرد باشد و در پایان s نداشته باشد، معمولاً نام چیزی است که نمیتوانیم بشماریم، مثل electricity یا rain.
If you find it easier, think plural or singular, instead of countable or not countable.
اگر برایتان راحتتر است، به جای countable و uncountable به مفرد و جمع فکر کنید.
And remember that there are also lots of words and expressions that you can use both with things you can count and with things that you cannot count.
به یاد داشته باشید واژهها و عبارتهای زیادی هم هستند که هم با قابل شمارشها و هم با غیرقابل شمارشها استفاده میشوند.
Lots of is one of these expressions.
Lots of یکی از این عبارتهاست.

Finally, here is a problem for you to think about.
در پایان، مسئلهای برای فکر کردن به شما میدهم.
In many supermarkets in England, they have a checkout, which is specially for people who only want to buy a few things.
در بسیاری از سوپرمارکتهای انگلیس، صندوقی هست که مخصوص کسانی است که فقط چند چیز میخرند.
This is so that they do not have to wait a long time behind people who are buying a whole month's groceries for a family of twelve people.
این کار برای این است که مجبور نباشند پشت سر کسانی منتظر بمانند که خرید یک ماهه خانوادهای دوازده نفره را انجام میدهند.
There is a sign to show which is the checkout for people who are buying only a few things.
تابلویی نشان میدهد کدام صندوق مخصوص کسانی است که فقط چند چیز میخرند.
In some supermarkets, the sign says "ten items orless ", but in one supermarket it says "ten items or fewer ".
در بعضی سوپرمارکتها تابلو میگوید «ten items or less»، اما در یکی از آنها نوشته «ten items or fewer».
برای چیزهای قابل شمارش از how many، many، a few، several و fewer استفاده میکنیم. برای چیزهای غیرقابل شمارش از how much، much، a little، a large amount of و less استفاده میکنیم. apples قابل شمارش است، اما sugar معمولاً غیرقابل شمارش است.
مثالها
How many apples do you need?
چند سیب لازم داری؟
How much sugar do you need?
چقدر شکر لازم داری؟
